The Carolina Mudcats were a Minor League Baseball club that called Zebulon, North Carolina—a Raleigh suburb—home from 1991 through 2025. For all 35 seasons, they played at Five County Stadium, except for a portion of their debut year when they used Fleming Stadium. The name "Mudcats" is a Southern term for catfish. The franchise originated as the Columbus Mudcats in Columbus, Georgia, before owner Steve Bryant moved it to Zebulon after the 1990 season. The team competed in the Double-A Southern League until 2011, then was succeeded in 2012 by a Class A-Advanced Carolina League squad that continued the club's lineage. Following Major League Baseball's 2021 minor league reorganization, the Mudcats dropped to Low-A and joined the Low-A East, which became the Single-A Carolina League in 2022. After the 2025 season, the team relocated to Wilson, North Carolina, rebranding as the Wilson Warbirds. The team arrived in Zebulon from Columbus, Georgia, where a Double-A Southern League club had played from 1969 to 1990. Five County Stadium was named for its location near the meeting point of five counties: Wake, Nash, Johnston, Franklin, and Wilson. The stadium was situated as close to Raleigh as possible without violating the territorial rights of the then-Class A Durham Bulls (now Triple-A).
As the Pirates' Double-A affiliate from 1991 to 1998, the Mudcats debuted on April 11, 1991, losing 1–0 on the road to the Greenville Braves. Their first win came the next night, 7–3. With Five County Stadium still under construction, the home opener was played at Fleming Stadium in Wilson on April 19, a 5–1 win over Greenville before 4,357 fans. The game, delayed by rain, was called in the eighth inning; starter Tim Wakefield earned the win. The first game at Five County Stadium occurred on July 3, with a standing-room-only crowd of 7,333 watching a 6–1 loss to the Braves. The Southern League used a split-season schedule, with division winners from each half qualifying for the playoffs. Carolina did not win either half in 1991, finishing 66–76.
