The RiverDogs were founded in 1980 as the Charleston Royals, a Kansas City Royals affiliate. They won the Southern Division championship in their first season but lost in the playoffs. The team was renamed the Charleston Rainbows in 1985 and became a San Diego Padres affiliate. After 11 consecutive losing seasons starting in 1989, the team was renamed the Charleston RiverDogs in 1994 following a name-the-team contest by Piggly Wiggly. In 1997, they moved to Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park and began an eight-year affiliation with the Tampa Bay Rays. That same year, attendance increased by over 100,000 fans. In 1998, the RiverDogs became the first professional baseball team to broadcast live video on the internet and the first to broadcast video of their entire home season. They posted their first winning season since 1988 in 2000.
