The team originated as the Potomac Nationals before owner Art Silber announced in June 2018 a plan to build a new stadium in Fredericksburg. The Fredericksburg city council approved the $35 million stadium in November 2018, with the city acting as an anchor tenant. Construction began in mid-2019, and despite delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, the stadium was baseball-ready by April 2020, though the 2020 minor league season was cancelled. The team was renamed the Fredericksburg Nationals in October 2019, with the marketing nickname 'FredNats.' Their mascot, Gus, was unveiled in March 2020.

The team's inaugural 2021 season began with a 16–3 loss on May 4, and their first home game on May 11 drew 2,065 fans. They finished 44–76, last in their division, but led the division in attendance. In 2022, the team improved to 75–55, winning the North Division second half, but lost in the playoffs to Lynchburg. After a 65–63 season in 2023, the FredNats won their first Carolina League championship on September 18, 2024, defeating Kannapolis 3–0 at home.

On June 9, 2025, the Silber family sold the team to Diamond Baseball Holdings, which also owns the Harrisburg Senators, another Nationals affiliate.
