The Lenoir Reds were the successor to the Lenoir Indians, who had played in the Carolina League and Tar Heel League from 1937 to 1939. In 1940, the franchise became a minor league affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds and adopted the Reds name. The team played its home games at Lenoir High School Field.

Under manager Ray Rice, the Reds compiled a 53–55 record, placing fourth in the six-team Tar Heel League, 19.0 games behind the first-place Statesville Owls. Despite the losing record, the Reds qualified for the playoffs, where they were defeated by Statesville four games to two in the first round.

The Lenoir Reds were the last Lenoir team to play in the Tar Heel League. The franchise did not field a team from 1941 to 1945, resuming play in 1946 as the Lenoir Red Sox in the Blue Ridge League.
