The Potomac Nationals were a Carolina League Minor League Baseball team based in Woodbridge, Virginia. Their home field was Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium. After the 2019 season, the franchise moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, and became the Fredericksburg Nationals.
The team originated as the Alexandria Dukes, who relocated from Alexandria, Virginia, to Woodbridge in 1984 and were renamed the Prince William Pirates. Over the years, the franchise went through several name changes: Prince William Yankees, Prince William Cannons, Potomac Cannons, and finally Potomac Nationals. The team had affiliations with the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and ultimately the Washington Nationals. All home games were played at Pfitzner Stadium, which had an announced seating capacity of 6,000. The mascot was Uncle Slam, a blue creature resembling Uncle Sam in hair and attire.
For at least two decades, the team sought a better ballpark. In 1998, Prince William County rejected a proposal for a $150 million sports and entertainment complex on the Cherry Hill Peninsula by the Potomac River. Owner Art Silber then changed the team name from Prince William Cannons to Potomac Cannons and announced plans to move to Fairfax County. In 2000, the team proposed a $250 million stadium and apartment complex near the Dunn Loring Metro station, but Fairfax County officials rejected it in 2001. In 2002, an agreement was reached with Prince William County to build a new $10 million stadium next to Pfitzner Stadium, but construction details announced in 2005 stalled with the site undecided.
Another ballpark proposal emerged around 2010. In 2011, Silber said he was looking for a site along I-95 in Prince William County and that the stadium would be privately funded. By 2012, the focus was on a site in Woodbridge. In December 2016, the team and county were reported close to a deal: the county would raise $35 million in municipal bonds, lease the site, pay for site preparation, construct the stadium, and lease it to the team for 30 years. The team would cover the county’s annual debt service and site lease costs. The county also planned a 1,400-space parking garage for stadium and commuter parking, seeking state funding starting in 2012, though the extent and status of that funding were never clear.
